IDE (also known as ZayRide/Taxiye in some versions) is Ethiopia’s homegrown ride-hailing app that connects passengers with private taxis and drivers. Since international services were limited, local startup Hybrid Designs launched RIDE to digitize the traditional contract taxi system in Addis Ababa.

Users book a ride through the app or even via SMS, and a nearby registered RIDE taxi picks them up. Fares are metered and cash or card payments are accepted. The app includes features like driver details, car plate number display, and emergency contacts for safety. RIDE has onboarded thousands of the blue-and-white taxis in Addis, giving customers a reliable way to hail cabs and drivers more business. It overcame challenges like low smartphone penetration by offering a phone dispatch option. As of 2025, RIDE remains a dominant mobility option in Ethiopia, illustrating local adaptation in the ride-share space.
