Ushahidi

About Ushahidi

Ushahidi (Swahili for “testimony”) is a Kenyan open-source app/platform originally created to map reports of violence during the 2008 elections. It allows ordinary citizens to submit reports via mobile (SMS, app, web) – such as incidents of violence, disasters, or service needs – which are then displayed on a live map. Over the years, the Ushahidi app has been deployed globally for crisis response and civic projects: monitoring elections in countries like Nigeria, tracking earthquake relief needs in Haiti, mapping harassment hotspots, and more. The Ushahidi mobile app enables offline data collection and syncing when internet is available, making it useful in remote or conflict areas. By crowdsourcing information from the ground-up, Ushahidi has given communities a powerful voice and coordination tool in times of crisis, and is a proud example of African innovation adopted worldwide.
